Chickens

Our chickens are culled every year to improve the characteristics of each breed. At present all the chicks are hatched naturally by their mothers so our available chicks are relatively limited, but each spring we'll have some available of each breed. Our chicks come straight run only-no sexing. On occasion I'll have an adult trio (one cockerel and two hens) of a pure breed for sale.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy is a non-profit organization working to protect genetic diversity in American livestock through conservation of nearly 100 breeds of asses, cattle, goats, horses, sheep, swine and poultry. ALBC was founded in 1977. Agricultural historians, seeking authentic period livestock for interpretive programs at Old Sturbridge Village and other historic sites, discovered that many heritage breeds were nearly extinct. Historians joined with farmers and animal scientists with their mission the conservation of endangered breeds of livestock. The importance of genetic diversity is immeasurable. If you’re going to raise some poultry, let it be something rare and unusual, and preserve something irreplaceable.

Silver Laced Wyandotte
Silver Laced Wyandotte - Click for a larger Image Silver Laced Wyandotte’s are an American breed recognized in 1883. They are a wonderful duel purpose bird, being good layers and excellent meat birds. The adult males weigh about 8 ½ pounds when mature and the hens are about 6 ½ pounds. Wyandotte’s have a rose comb which is small and sits close to the head. They are beautiful smooth clean cut looking birds with white feathers patterned with black. A beautiful hardy friendly bird, these are wonderful for the small flock or a new 4H project. They lay nice medium brown eggs of good size. The Silver Laced Wyandotte is considered a recovering breed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

Brahma
Brahma - Click for a larger Image Light Brahmas are a very old breed probably originating in India. The Males mature to a very large 12 pounds while the hens make it to 9 ½ pounds. This bird has a striking color pattern that always draws attention. Combined with its massive size and the feathers that grow down its legs, this is a very noticed bird perfect for exhibition. Due to the huge frame required for these birds they mature rather slowly, but the impressive results are worth the wait. These gentle giants are listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy as “watch” due to their increasing rarity.

Buff Orpington
Buff Orpington - Click for a larger Image Buff Orpingtons are a beautiful gold colored, large size bird. Males will mature at 10 pounds while hens will be about 8 pounds. They are wonderful layers of large brown eggs. Due to their light feathers and white skin they dress out nicely. Orpingtons have large red combs and heavy plumage. They are listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy as recovering. Chicks are fluffy little yellow bundles. The breed can be very docile and can even be taught to come to a whistle!

Cream Brabanter
Cream Brabanter - Click for a larger Image Cream Brabanters are a very rare bird. They are non setters and lay good sized near white eggs. Brabanters have a beard and a curious "crown" of feathers that stick up on top of their head. Even the chicks have this. The chicks are probably the most unique chick I've ever seen. When we have enough breeding stock we'll have some of this great chicks for sale. Most likely in 2008 spring hatch.

Mixed assortment:   We also have this category of mixed birds. They will tend toward heavy weights and will be good layers. The mix will include crosses of White Giant, Production Reds, Buff Orpingtons, and Silver laced Wyandotte. These will generally make excellent table fare and give you a fun mix of many different colors and looks.
