Bouvier des Flandres are wonderful dogs in the herding class. They come in several colors from fawn to black, passing through salt and pepper, gray and brindle. They stand 24 ½-27 ½ for males and 23 ½ to 26 ½ inches at the shoulder. They are unusual dogs in both appearance and behavior. We have a wonderful AKC female Bouvier named Wookie Bear, who certainly demonstrates many of the peculiarities of Bouviers. Stubborn, smart, independent, affectionate. Once she learns something she never forgets it. She takes a while to decide if she’s going to do something. If it makes sense to her she’ll obey, but sometimes it takes some convincing to show her how much sense it makes!
Bouviers are pretty high maintenance dogs. You have to brush them about 3 times a week.... thoroughly, to free up all the loose hair or you’ll be sweeping it off everything and you’ll have a LOT of mats to work out. Bouviers also
have beards.....which catch a half gallon of water and drip it all over the floor every time they drink. These beards also collect mud and dirt, assorted food etc when they eat. I can’t really say it’s to much work to keep them up, I look on Wookie as a kid. When she’s done eating something messy, I wipe her chin, and when she’s dripping off her beard I wipe her face. All kids need their hair combed at least 3 times a week, so she’s easier than a toddler!
Bouviers normally have their ears cropped and their tails bobbed. Wookie has her tail bobbed, which for hygiene reasons ended up being a very good thing, however she doesn’t have her ears cropped, I don’t see a good reason to continue this practice and none of our puppies will be having their ears cropped, although we do plan on bobbing tails.
Wookie Bear will be a year old in March of 2007. We’ll most likely breed her after she is 2 years old and her hips can be certified. All of her pups will go to wonderful homes. I’m adding a Wookie area to this web site so you can watch her mature from a silly girl to a wonderful dog. When we get ready to breed.....most likely in 2009, we’ll take applications from the web site.
Wookie has grown quite a bit this summer. She has a hard time with the heat and is really looking forward to the cooler fall. Her herding classes are going well and she continues to really love them. She is 16 months old now.
| These are pictures of Wookie Bear, the wonderful Bouvier of Half Creek Farm, training under the teaching guide of Erylon Hines, a wonderful patient herding instructor from the Dalles, Oregon! She's doing wonderful.. Erylon says we'll have to work harder with me, Though! |

| This is a late fall picture of The Wookie. She'll be 3 in March but as you can see has turned into quite a lovely girl.
We haven't lost a single kid since Wookie got her "grown up" bark. These Bouvier's are just a joy. |

| This is a recent picture of The Wookie. She was 3 years old in March and continues to prove
herself an excellent farm dog. She helps us work the goats, moves them into the pastures when they think
they're going to resist, keeps coyotes away, and protects the farm. I can't imagine the place without this
wonderful girl. She's about 80 pounds now and appears to have finished growing. |
